United Equities in the News

Bellaire retailers shuffle space to make way for new H-E-B

Several businesses being displaced by H-E-B's new and expanded Bellaire store have found new spots close to home.

The shopping center in the 5100 block of Bissonnet near South Rice is being torn down to make way for a two-story H-E-B grocery store, the latest sign of a trend toward denser retail developments on close-in land. The new store will be nearly twice the size of the 36,000-square-foot H-E-B store, which opened in 1994.

Domino's Pizza and Thai Cottage have signed leases at 5200 Bissonnet. They will be among three tenants taking over the space of the Gatherings banquet hall, according to Doug Freedman of United Equities, who represented the landlord.

The UPS store will relocate to a space next to Sherwin Williams at 5233 Bellaire at the end of July.

Nationwide Insurance-Larry Haas Agency is relocating to an office building owned by United Equities at 4545 Bissonnet.

Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches plans to open in the former Papa Murphy's space next to Menchie's at 5124 Bissonnet. The triangle-shaped building is owned by an affiliate of United Equities.

In the same building, Hefner's Plaza Cleaners plans to relocate in mid July to 5200 Bissonnet. Boquelle Cleaners from the H-E-B center will take its place.

Hefner's will join Domino's and Thai Cottage in the center across the street.

Freedman represented the landlord, Sagstex Investments, in all of the leases at 5200 Bissonnet.

At the H-E-B Center, Hong Kong Chef, a longtime Bellaire restaurant, has closed. No leases have been announced for Q Nails & Spa II and Rice Discount Liquor.

Construction on the H-E-B store will begin next year. It will be the San Antonio-based chain's first two-story store in Houston.
